The creature had been hiding deep in the drainage pipes during the height of the daylight when the downpour started: just a few loose petals, colors brilliant even in the dark, fluttering down from street level. Then several buckets of fresh, clean water sluiced down from the storm drain and brought handfuls of freshly plucked petals with them. Plastered all over with petals that smelled of fresh surface air and had, it hoped, been touched by the object of its affection, the creature squirmed in delight at this sudden reciprocation.
