STOP!!!! TALKING!!!!

Hey, do you want more Deltarune rambling?

[ Yes ♥ Yes ]

MORE DELTARUNE RAMBLING IT IS. I wish I could write fanfiction, but, when I try to think of a concept, I just find myself feverishly analysing this game.

In today's entry, I try to pin down everything I can establish about Kris so far! I thought for a long time that silent protagonists just didn't interest me, but I am fascinated by Kris.

There are spoilers here for all of Deltarune so far, including the Snowgrave route. Some things have probably slipped my mind, and I haven't beaten the game's optional bosses, so I may be missing some details we learn there.

What do we know about Kris? )

Also, here's a little follow-up thought on my 'Kris has a crush on Noelle' theory, i.e. more transparent Kris/Noelle shipping disguised as serious analysis. Not really spoilery, but does discuss an optional conversation in chapter three of Deltarune.

Who are you bringing to the festival? )

Am I biased and/or overthinking? Almost certainly. But I still feel a lot is clicking into place now that I'm viewing Deltarune through this lens.

OTW Signal, June 2025

Posted by callmeri

Every month in OTW Signal, we take a look at stories that connect to the OTW’s mission and projects, including issues related to legal matters, technology, academia, fannish history and preservation issues of fandom, fan culture, and transformative works.

In the News

The Conversation’s article “The lore of ‘lore'” explores how fandom fueled the reinvention of a 1,000-year-old word:

Now essential online slang, [“lore”] can be traced back to Old English, where it referred primarily to learning, as in the act of teaching or being taught. Over time, lore came to be associated with more informal knowledge, passed on through word of mouth … [but then it] largely slipped out of common usage … So, how did “lore” come to hold such contemporary relevance?

“Lore” still carries shades of its original meaning, but just as fans expand and transform canon, modern usage reimagines it. Oxford University Press—which shortlisted “lore” for their 2024 word of the year—explains:

In recent years, people have been using “lore” in different ways and in new contexts. For example, they might now talk about the lore surrounding a particular celebrity, or a character in a book or film, or even refer to their own personal history as their lore. Online cultures and social media have seen the emergence of new kinds of celebrities and highly-engaged fandoms, and the word has been applied much more widely.

From its popularity in K-pop to the semi-eponymous Fanlore, the rise of “lore” is a great example of how fans build cultural meaning through shared language and creative reinterpretation.

The Geekiary’s article on fandom holidays speaks on how fans mark time within their communities. Be it May the Fourth (Star Wars Day) or Destiel’s confession anniversary, fandom holidays are not an uncommon phenomenon. Some humorous, some profound, these unofficial yet widely beloved holidays are often tied to moments from canon (such as a character’s birthday or an in-universe event) and serve to foster community building.
These observances turn the ordinary calendar into a timeline of shared emotion and meaning. As an act of tradition, they become ritual anchors that give structure to the fan’s calendar, offering a sense of comfort and familiarity in an ever-changing world. The article notes how this act of building new traditions and creating opportunities for community bonding forges a sense of cultural memory for fans.

In her book Rogue Archives: Digital Cultural Memory and Media Fandom, Abigail De Kosnik describes how “Memory has gone rogue in the sense that it has come loose from its fixed place in the production cycle. It now may be found anywhere, or everywhere, in the chain of making”. Celebrating holidays online or by digitizing photographs/experiences allows these memories to be accessed later on, rather than be fixed to just a specific person or place. It lets our fandoms live outside of us as individuals.

Like lore, fandom holidays demonstrate how participation itself becomes a form of authorship—each contribution adding another thread to the tapestry.

OTW Tips

Fandom is global, and many amazing fanworks are written, drawn, or subtitled in languages other than one’s own. Whether you’re tagging fanfiction in your native language or collaborating with international fans, your efforts enrich fandom’s diversity and inclusivity.
The OTW is recruiting for Tag Wrangling Volunteers (Russian), Internal Complaint and Conflict Resolution Volunteers, and Support Volunteers (Chinese).
Consider volunteering for one of the OTW’s teams to support and celebrate global fan participation!

We want your suggestions for the next OTW Signal post! If you know of an essay, video, article, podcast, or news story you think we should know about, send us a link. We are looking for content in all languages! Submitting a link doesn’t guarantee that it will be included in an OTW post, and inclusion of a link doesn’t mean that it is endorsed by the OTW.

Six Sentence Sunday (and something I've actually finished!)

I was just going to drop a link to something I actually wrote and uploaded to AO3, but then I saw [personal profile] delphi's Six Sentence Sunday and remembered that was something I wanted to start doing (which will hopefully keep me writing). ❤️❤️

If anyone else is doing this, please link me yours. And, if your don't want to post your own, feel free to do it in the comments.  I'd love to read it.

So, first this, and then the other story. These 6 sentences is from a Green Creek story I've been plugging away on for a very long time. It's Mark/Gordo:

When it all got to be too much, when the multitudes of blues became too vivid and overpowering, he ran. When that didn't work, he drove. And when even that didn't stop the drowning feeling of ocean waves of blue crashing around him, he kept driving until he could breathe again, could see the familiar trees engulf him, the familiar scents inflame him. Dirt. And grass. And leaves. And smoke mixed with motor oil.

He could breathe again when he could breathe in those aromas.

This time though, this time the smell of other overpowered all else. Made his blood boil.

*sigh* I just love these two knuckleheads.

And speaking of people I love. Last week was long time friend [personal profile] kaalee's birthday. And I was asked on the Heartstopper Discord if I'd like to create something for her. And, of course I did. So, I wrote something that kinda of paid tribute to all the fandoms we've followed each other through Sherlock/ HP (but only slightly as I'm all not ready to write in that world, or ask others to read in it)/ and of course, Heartstopper ❤️❤️

i am not a warm weather creature

it was SO HOT today. SO. HOT. i worked from work because for all its faults the ugly building where i work is arctically cold in the summer.

my roommate is GONE and all her stuff is GONE and she left me her orchids (two, small ones) and some random food and some random cleaning products but she is GONE. she came back saturday with her parents and her mom took over the dining room table to pack the remaining ceramics (and said something along the lines of "it doesn't look like there's been any progress" so i reassured her that even tho there were a bunch of things left it was SO MUCH BETTER than it had been and there was SO MUCH LESS STUFF) and her dad dealt with the plants outside (sort of) and my sister and i packed around them. eventually they all left with almost everything - my roommate left a bunch of stuff in the fridge and freezer - she was going to come back sunday but texted me that night to say she was on her way and then she and her dad reappeared and took what was left. and then i was alone. :D just me and my sixty boxes.

(when i got home thursday night my roommate had moved everything into her room and i thought it was the emptiest the apartment had ever looked since before we moved in.)

my sister came over saturday morning and helped me pack until we ran out of tape and while we were out getting more my roommate showed up with her parents. we filled sixteen boxes in like three and a half or four hours which was super helpful and then she had to leave and i lay on my bed in front of the fan to get out of my roommate's way and after she left i did some more. and friday i worked from home and packed some and the woman who wanted my bookcases came and got them and i just enjoyed being in the house alone.

and on sunday i got a late start and packed boxes and contemplated my navel and tried to cope with how hot it was. so hot. ugh.

i'm all caught up on resident alien and it is such a weird show but i really like it.

i should be packing but i am intimidated by the kitchen.

1) I've been seeing a lot more posting on [community profile] common_nature, very encouraging! Have added the first of my waterfall photos there, of Latourelle Falls.

2) Looks like there is a spammer at work on Squidgeworld. I got 3 comments to different posts within a few hours today, two with outright solicitations for commissions.

3) Saw Dune 2, and thought it was ok. It's almost as if the movie was made to be the direct opposite of David Lynch's version in casting and tone as well as visuals. Read more... )

4) Finally saw the Barbie movie as well. I can see why it did well. Given its remit and likely limitations, I thought it did a good job. It had a clear direction, and it did it well and with both humor and heart. I also quite enjoyed its ending. That said, I think the film itself opened the door to a more incisive critique which it didn't follow. Read more... )

5) This past month is turning out to be an expensive one. My partner's sister had a roof leak in her spare bedroom, which went on long enough that it damaged the bed underneath it before she noticed. Since this was where my partner stays when he visits his family, a replacement was needed. So we decided to move his current bed there and get a new one. Read more... )

lolsob

I tripped coming back from the garden after watering and skinned the hell out my left knee and twisted my right ankle, plus minor scrapes on my palms. Ow.

Hobbled home, rinsed everything off (because of course I had some dirt on me from wrestling the garden hose and whatnot), smeared on antibacterial ointment, iced both joints (not super successfully), taped bandaids to my knee, and ordered delivery of a bento box. Now I need to put on enough clothes to get downstairs to receive said delivery, and get back up the stairs to eat. Ow ow OW.

This was a perfectly pleasant heatwave until then! I got the window unit into my bedroom window yesterday, have been eating popsicles and drinking various flavored waters, and made summer rolls last night. I was going to make peanut noodles. But no. Did I mention OW?

monday poem #332: Maggie Smith, "Animals"

Animals

The president called undocumented immigrants
animals, and in the nature documentary
I watched this morning with my kids,
after our Saturday pancakes, the white
fairy term doesn't build a nest but lays
her single speckled egg in the crook of a branch
or a tree knot. It looks precarious there
because it is. And while she's away,
because even mothers must eat, another bird
swoops in and pecks it, sips some of what now
won't become. The tern returns and knows
something isn't right—the egg crumpled,
the red slick and saplike running down the tree—
but her instinct is so strong, she sits. Just sits
on the broken egg. I have been this bird.
We have been animals all our lives,
with our spines and warm blood, our milky tits
and fine layers of fur. Our live births, too,
if we're lucky. But what animal wrenches
a screaming baby from his mother?
Do we know anymore what it is to be human?
I've stopped knowing what it is to be human.

Additional literal translations, yes or no?

One of the books I'm reading right now is Anne Crignon's Une belle grève de femmes: Les Penn Sardin, Douarnenez 1924 (A women's strike: The Penn sardin [1], Douarnenez, 1924). I'm two-thirds of the way through and it has been really good book so far.

[1] "Penn sardin" is Breton for "sardine head"; it's the name of the headdress for women of Douarnenez and, by extension those same women.

There is one thing, though. Because of the time/place the book is set in (Brittany, 1920s) the book occasionally uses Breton -- the dominant language in that era/area -- to transcribe the exact words of slogans, songs, announcements, etc. Now. I speak a little Breton. A very little Breton, but enough to know that "Pemp real a vo" did not translate directly to "twenty-five sous per hour" -- "pemp" means five, not twenty-five. It bugged me enough that I eventually went and got my Breton-French dictionnary: a "real" is worth five sous. A literal translation would be "Five five-sous we'll get" (the "per hour" is implied).

There was another moment where I also had to fetch the dictionnary because I got tripped up by sentence structure in the Breton vs the French translation. So I would appreciate literal translations as well as accurate ones -- though possibly this is mostly because or where my language skills are: were I better or worse, I'm not sure I would have cared or noticed.

What is your preference for in-text translations? Literal, accurate, both? A secret other option?

The NO FAKES Act Has Changed – and It’s So Much Worse

Posted by ARRAY(0x558930ef8f08)

A bill purporting to target the issue of misinformation and defamation caused by generative AI has mutated into something that could change the internet forever, harming speech and innovation from here on out.

The Nurture Originals, Foster Art and Keep Entertainment Safe (NO FAKES) Act aims to address understandable concerns about generative AI-created “replicas” by creating a broad new intellectual property right. That approach was the first mistake: rather than giving people targeted tools to protect against harmful misrepresentationsbalanced against the need to protect legitimate speech such as parodies and satiresthe original NO FAKES just federalized an image-licensing system.

Take Action

Tell Congress to Say No to NO FAKES

The updated bill doubles down on that initial mistaken approach by mandating a whole new censorship infrastructure for that system, encompassing not just images but the products and services used to create them, with few safeguards against abuse.

The new version of NO FAKES requires almost every internet gatekeeper to create a system that will a) take down speech upon receipt of a notice; b) keep down any recurring instancemeaning, adopt inevitably overbroad replica filters on top of the already deeply flawed copyright filters;  c) take down and filter tools that might have been used to make the image; and d) unmask the user who uploaded the material based on nothing more than the say so of person who was allegedly “replicated.”

This bill would be a disaster for internet speech and innovation.

Targeting Tools

The first version of NO FAKES focused on digital replicas. The new version goes further, targeting tools that can be used to produce images that aren’t authorized by the individual, anyone who owns the rights in that individual’s image, or the law. Anyone who makes, markets, or hosts such tools is on the hook. There are some limitsthe tools must be primarily designed for, or have only limited commercial uses other than making unauthorized imagesbut those limits will offer cold comfort to developers given that they can be targeted based on nothing more than a bare allegation. These provisions effectively give rights-holders the veto power on innovation they’ve long sought in the copyright wars, based on the same tech panics.

Takedown Notices and Filter Mandate

The first version of NO FAKES set up a notice and takedown system patterned on the DMCA, with even fewer safeguards. NO FAKES expands it to cover more service providers and require those providers to not only take down targeted materials (or tools) but keep them from being uploaded in the future.  In other words, adopt broad filters or lose the safe harbor.

Filters are already a huge problem when it comes to copyright, and at least in that instance all it should be doing is flagging for human review if an upload appears to be a whole copy of a work. The reality is that these systems often flag things that are similar but not the same (like two different people playing the same piece of public domain music). They also flag things for infringement based on mere seconds of a match, and they frequently do not take into account context that would make the use authorized by law.

But copyright filters are not yet required by law. NO FAKES would create a legal mandate that will inevitably lead to hecklers’ vetoes and other forms of over-censorship.

The bill does contain carve outs for parody, satire, and commentary, but those will also be cold comfort for those who cannot afford to litigate the question.

Threats to Anonymous Speech

As currently written, NO FAKES also allows anyone to get a subpoena from a court clerk—not a judge, and without any form of proof—forcing a service to hand over identifying information about a user.

We've already seen abuse of a similar system in action. In copyright cases, those unhappy with the criticisms being made against them get such subpoenas to silence critics. Often that the criticism includes the complainant's own words as proof of the criticism, an ur-example of fair use. But the subpoena is issued anyway and, unless the service is incredibly on the ball, the user can be unmasked.

Not only does this chill further speech, the unmasking itself can cause harm to users. Either reputationally or in their personal life.

Threats to Innovation

Most of us are very unhappy with the state of Big Tech. It seems like not only are we increasingly forced to use the tech giants, but that the quality of their services is actively degrading. By increasing the sheer amount of infrastructure a new service would need to comply with the law, NO FAKES makes it harder for any new service to challenge Big Tech. It is probably not a coincidence that some of these very giants are okay with this new version of NO FAKES.

Requiring removal of tools, apps, and services could likewise stymie innovation. For one, it would harm people using such services for otherwise lawful creativity.  For another, it would discourage innovators from developing new tools. Who wants to invest in a tool or service that can be forced offline by nothing more than an allegation?

This bill is a solution in search of a problem. Just a few months ago, Congress passed Take It Down, which targeted images involving intimate or sexual content. That deeply flawed bill pressures platforms to actively monitor online speech, including speech that is presently encrypted. But if Congress is really worried about privacy harms, it should at least wait to see the effects of the last piece of internet regulation before going further into a new one. Its failure to do so makes clear that this is not about protecting victims of harmful digital replicas.

NO FAKES is designed to consolidate control over the commercial exploitation of digital images, not prevent it. Along the way, it will cause collateral damage to all of us.

Take Action

Tell Congress to Say No to NO FAKES

My dojo had a seminar this past weekend, which was lovely. The mat was full but not crowded, the energy was fantastic, got to see a lot of excellent people, and we had more than enough food for everyone to eat after the seminar. (And none pizza, because we know better and are willing to put in a bit more effort to provide better sustenance.) Everyone had a good time! Great practice! Love to take ukemi for sensei's demonstrations, and to get the vibe that she selected me not just for being a yudansha from the host dojo but because she enjoyed throwing me around!

Now we can start looking ahead to next year's seminar, which will be the dojo's 50th anniversary seminar. I think that the goal is for me to take nidan at that seminar, but it's far enough out (May 30th) that there's no particular plans yet.

When I was talking to my mom about this (a sidebar in a conversation mostly about scheduling me flying out to visit my family), she told me that next year would also be the 50th year since women could attend the air force academy.

She was a member of that first class of women.

She is much more excited about my dojo's 50th anniversary.

anyway it is TOO HOT right now and I can't wait for the heat dome currently covering the east coast to break so that it stops being high 90s F/feels like over 100 F. At least the seminar only had normal summer heat! Not this nonsense!

(this nonsense, btw, is hot enough that the building fire alarms went off because of the heat! nothing was actually wrong! it's just Too Hot! isn't that fun!)
