Despite living in the same town, despite both working in or under the Buried Gardens on a regular basis, despite having some version of independent, adult life, the two lovers could not always see each other face-to-face and sit hand-in-claw. From the underground, though, they sent earthworms up to her, bearing messages to be shaped out in wriggling semaphore. She learned to interpret their movements, just as she learned to bring them up by sinking her merely-human hands into the earth with a sharp, careful precision to rival that of amethyst claws.
