The Quartz Family Hardware front desk had been papered with a variety of homemade posters and fliers, grainy photocopies showing where the lost were last seen: at workbenches, or ranked among their kin, or, worst of all, as just an empty space where one should be. Some showed up again and again: 10mm sockets, 3/8” hex wrenches, thousands of collective feet of tape measure. It was all too common a tragedy, these lost and lamented tools, and only rarely did they find their way home again unaided.
