Today's Keyboard Smash
[Yet another reason to dislike summer: the heat somehow causes my internet to go down incessantly. Grr, arrrg.]
In an amusing conjunction of weirdness, I recently encountered two bits of personifying disease. The first is this older episode of Uncanny Japan on the God of Smallpox and the history surrounding that. Not exactly weird, I suppose, but interesting, if a bit sad. Gods for everything!
In short order, I also saw this post on tumblr that is a whole series of humansonas for various viruses created by the Taiwanese CDC. (The CDC has their own little mascot as well.) The character designs are quite delightful, in a slightly morbid and disturbing way. General consensus seems to be that Covid-19 is a nonbinary icon, so there's that. Mascots for everything too!
Humans just really want a version of everything that looks like them, that seems like it would follow the rules of humans. Relatable. Manageable. Some things never change.
