My Brother, My Brother And Me - episode 412, Robocup
Sometimes I feel a little bad: I don't really pay much attention to MBMBAM when I listen to it. I did catch the titular bit of this episode, though I can't remember any of the lead-up to it, and I can't tell you much else of the "advice" given. But it's always a nice cheery-weird background hum. I listen to episodes at random. Though I will say, Shrimp Heaven Now (including theme song) is a bit that will stick with me for life as much as anything from Monty Python. So they've got that going for them.
TechStuff - How to Make a Podcast
Gee, will it shock anyone to know that I have a nebulous desire to write and perform a podcast of Mine Very Own? Mostly, I found this episode didn't contain much new information for me, though I always appreciate the reassurance that my currently available set up--Blue Snowball mic and Audacity--are considered acceptable options. Look, I just...really love this goddamb medium.
The Sorting Hat Podcast - episode #046, Halloween Things
Yeah, that's right, Halloween in July. I had a craving. The group is particularly rowdy and distractible in this episode, which, yeah, that's pretty much what I'm here for. I now know more about candy corn than I ever needed to, because it is an adorable noblin of LIES AND DISGUST, gods, why does it have to look so cute and taste so rubbish?
And in the category of television (or Netflix and No Chill, as the case may be):
Hannah Gadsby - Nanette
*drags hand down face* Right, okay. So I knew roughly what I was in for when watching this. I hadn't read a lot about it, but I knew it was going to start out with "normal" jokes and then segue into a takedown of comedy...culture? Expectations? Something. There were definitely a lot of moments as it went on when I thought of the audience, only straight white people are laughing right now. It wasn't that it wasn't funny, but... I found myself making a kind of hitching, exhale of a not-laugh, a noise where the reality crashed down before any real laugh could come out. She didn't surprise me with what she said, but it was a shock to hear it said at all.
And to whoever has been saying, ugh, I don't want a comedy show that just makes me feel guilty--just--fuck you. I don't even care. The idea that self-deprecating humor costs us something extra when we're already marginalized was both obvious and revelatory. The way she reflexively starts to laugh at herself at her most vulnerable moments, and the face she makes as she catches herself doing it and the audience laughing along--it hurt like a kick to the ribs every time. Just. Her face.
It was very good. I do not think I want to watch any of her earlier work, but I would really like to see what she does next.
