When friends came to visit after the diagnosis, with their caution and their euphemisms, they had to push past mounds of yarn and curtains of knitting, spiraling endlessly through the house. Even as they sat with mugs of tea and expectations balanced on their laps, he seamlessly wove in the start of another skein and produced another couple feet of the infinite scarf. His friends thought it was the boredom of illness that drove the knitting, because they could not truly understand how little he wanted to see anything–even a scarf–come to an end.
