Their thesis dismantled their life in strange ways, pulling it apart at the binding, unraveling the etymology around them. They had only wanted to define, once and for all, the term monster–something concrete to anchor the thesis to in the opening paragraphs–and so they had turned to the dictionaries and the histories and the biographies. As they worked, the world of language collapsed into a mess of teeth and claws, skin and mind, until the only thing left was a wordless howl, and they knew it for the answer they had sought.
