The residents of the tunnels found the stalk first, rising up through a cavern like an escape ladder, the still-forming flowers just faintly glowing pearls shrouded in papery skins. Already offsets had begun to form around the base of the mother plant, little clones that would survive after the plant gave the last of its life to its flowering. The residents notified the caretakers of the Buried Gardens and negotiated to allow surface dwellers as well to climb down and view a bloom one century in the making.
