Looking past their young client, the tracker watched the swamp creature building her nest for the time-retrieved egg, and she couldn’t help but say, “I’m sorry, I couldn’t save them like you asked.” The egg was the sort of object-person that skirted the line between what she could bring back out of time and what she couldn’t, but it wasn’t the miracle she had been hired to find. Surprise and confusion clouded the young woman’s face, and she said, “You saved a whole species from dying of a broken heart, and if it’s not forever, it’s still better than no time at all.”
