Lake Lewisia #627
"But who will you leave all this to," people had asked for years when they looked on the gardens and the house, the library and the statuary, the everything of hir life, "if you aren't going to have any children?" It wasn't that ze hadn't given the matter any consideration, but rather ze thought it would be more in the spirit of the place to let people discover the answer on their own. One day, when ze was gone and no longer walked the shifting paths of the grounds, the friends and strangers who had walked with hir would happen upon hir inheritors: sculptures strolling the paths, books flocking in the trees, a house that looked after itself because ze spent a lifetime teaching it how.
