It wasn't the first time, but he never quite got used to the way some people reacted to finding him crouched in some abandoned lot or digging on the wrong side of an obviously locked and inviolate fence, spreading seeds and tending sprouts. "You can't be here," they would say, or "you can't do that," both of them just variations on a theme: "nothing is allowed to thrive here." Bemused, he always answered, "No one needs permission to live."
