She developed something of a reputation in the neighborhood almost before she officially moved into the building, pausing the realtor’s tour to re-ink a protective sigil by the laundry room using a ballpoint pen after she saw one side had smudged away. From there, her attentions spiraled outward, picking places and things and people to care for, driven by some impulse onlookers could not decipher. If asked, she would have simply said she knew: she knew immediately when something belonged to her, the magnetic pull of her possessiveness, and she took care of that which she owned, selfishness turned to virtue.
