A distant descendant of the Ancient Egyptian underworld custom of weighing the deceased's heart against a feather, the elevators judged their occupants. Unbeknownst to riders, all those steel cables and counterweights ended in one delicately balanced feather deep in the unlisted sub-basement of the building. Press whatever button you like, the elevator ultimately decided what floor you deserved to arrive at, and the building had more levels to choose from than anyone realized.
