"Long noodles grant long life," she said, arthritic hands still wielding a knife across a sheet of dough as skillfully as ever to cut a continuous serpentine of noodle from it. Behind her, the first of the three cooks kneaded the next batch of dough onto the end of the one she was cutting, ensuring she would never run out. Before her, the third cook stoked the flames below the great iron pot where the water boiled, while their current supplicant slurped up the infinite noodle in hopes of a mouthful of immortality.
