On rainy days, it was easier to move around aboveground, so the creature sometimes--a little guiltily--oozed up to the front steps, the garden, the back patio, investigating and lingering. This time, it found something new: a plastic kiddie pool on the patio, filled to the brim and overflowing a little whenever the wind blew a burst of rain across its surface. And waiting, bundled against the wind and rain, was the object of its affections, not hidden by sewer gratings or the dark of night, waiting in a place he had made comfortable for the both of them.
