Of course, the novelty of a whole new terrain appealed to all sorts, and not only the kind of mild-mannered mad scientists who longed to study wandering landscapes and semicorporeal architecture by quietly observing and collecting samples. The dirt bikers saw the dry wash and its silty soil as a perfect new race course, where no neighbors would complain about the noise and disruption. They hadn't considered that the desert's occupants might object, and their senses of self-preservation were attuned to forest and lake threats only, so the giant scorpion's nest swallowed the lead racer before anyone noticed the displaced ground.
