Pandemic Garden Club

Welcome to the August edition of Pandemic Garden Club! Growing good things in strange times!

Anyone is welcome to comment with what they're growing right now, things they would like to try, problems they're encountering, and questions they have. Share resources, answer questions, shout encouragement.

As for myself...

A little light on the pictures this month. Mostly because I don’t want to go outside during daylight. We’re pretty much just hanging out at 100 degrees and up daily. The plants that like that sort of thing are doing great. Tomatoes and plums are producing in droves. But goddamn, it is unpleasant to be out there.

A patch of alfalfa with deep purple flower clusters.

This is alfalfa. We planted it last fall. It was supposed to be a cool-season cover crop, to help with weed suppression and serve as a green mulch. It...did not grow at the time. It was a total flop. So, of course, it has elected to grow now instead. *hands*

A single large sunflower head, the center not yet showing seeds.

Yes, I’m growing sunflowers again. Mostly just from seeds harvested off last year’s flowers. Looks like it’s mostly the Mammoth, which both grew well and actually set fertile seeds. Unlike the Mongolian, which produced copious amounts of seeds that were nothing but empty hulls. Weird.

A clump of dandelions, the flowers already gone to seed and partially blown away.

There are a couple of select spots where dandelions volunteer. I only saw a couple this year. I would love to plant them more extensively. I would, given my druthers, have the whole blessed place inundated with dandelions. I’ve yet to find a source of seeds that seems reputable, though. So for now, I must content myself with them showing up as they please.

It's so hot here I'm just trying to save stuff. All my plants are crowded as close as possible to the back door where the shade of the house hits first and hoping that thermal mass can help keep things cool. The basils are living in bins of water because even with daily watering they were frying.

The only thing I've got that's happily growing is the ivy and elephant ears in the courtyard which are throwing runners up the walls so much I'm doing a weekly sweep to pull them off the brick.
