“Hello, cousin,” the salamander said as its flames licked up the side of another pine tree, turning the sap to lava and the needles to sparklers. In the creek, slick bodies dove and sought shelter under rocks. “Safe travels, cousin,” the salamander replied as it watched the forest fire pass from under the smoked mirror of the water’s surface.
