The rash was the first warning sign that a flare was on its way. She hastily called out from work, stockpiled food, and bundled herself off to bed. By the next night, her feathers had all come in, each bump of the rash erupting into scarlet plumes, and her nest of blankets had singe marks from the smoldering phoenix fire under her skin.
