She had started drawing the landscapes as a child, in an age when her knowledge of the wide world came from a leather-bound set of encyclopedias rather than the internet. Even after the rise of satellite imagery available to the public and virtual tours of remote locations, it hadn’t occurred to her to go looking for a place she thought she had simply been dreaming up for decades. It took such a mundane bit of chance as seeing the right off ramp sign at the right moment on a business trip to discover: the lake, and perhaps everything else, everyone else, existed after all.
