As the weather turned cold, warming boxes started to crop up around town, in backyards and between buildings. Stray cats staked claims over many of them, but sometimes what peeked its head out in the morning would be a possum or a raccoon instead. The lovely straw-lined box behind the diner sheltered something else entirely, which regularly retrieved discarded food scraps with tendrils of dark material the nighttime crew chose not to examine too closely.
