They wove intricate patterns of color into their long hair, watercolor tattoos splashed across their limbs, and piercings studded with gemstones picked out constellations. Everyone asked what the significance was, if these were spells or codes or hidden weapons somehow worked into all those decorations. They tended to lie, to pretend they kept true magic in such obvious places, but really they just liked the color and the shine, mundane but no less precious.
