Explaining to her college roommate about her internship had been going well enough, everything couched in mundane terms and generalities an outsider could understand, until she slipped and mentioned her mentor would be the Woman in the Black Hat. "Uh, doesn't she have a name you could call her instead of a creepy title?" No amount of cultural translation could explain the power of true names to someone who didn't know about magic, or the taboo against even drawing attention to the names of the women who protected her hometown from the sort of enemies who could use a name against them.
