Yeah, it's definitely something meant to stretch the comfort zone a bit. On the plus side, you totally don't have to share whatever you make with anyone. It can just be a fun thing you do for yourself--sometimes the pressure of other people seeing our awkward first attempts at something is the only reason we don't do it, and that's a pity.
