A reminder to those traveling this summer: always carry a bit of home with you whether you’re going out of town or out of the country. In an emergency, a piece of home may summon aid to you as a distress beacon, transport you home in an instant, or create a physical manifestation of your sense of belonging to act as a guide. Suitable pieces of home include small amounts of dirt, stones from the lakeshore, seeds of native plants, and humanely-obtained shells, skins, or carapaces from small creatures around your house.
