The swamp creature, now the last of her kind, rested her head on the human girl’s thighs, her clawed fingers worrying at the few scales she had been able to retrieve as mementos of her lost mate. It had been days since the girl had heard the soft, piping whistles of her friend’s voice, and she resolved to do whatever it took to keep mourning from becoming extinction.
