He waved the flashlight beam from side to side, pushing deeper into the liquid blackness that filled the familiar rooms where they had played video games and watched movies. He had known his best friend was in a dark place, but he had thought that was a metaphor, something mental, not this physical miasma. Still, he had sworn he would always come for her when she got lost in her head, and it would be no different this time–apart from the flashlight and the length of rope tethering him to the front door.
