It took some convincing, but once she explained what it was for--“the older ones have a better chance of surviving out on their own”--the owner of Quartz Hardware let her take the rusty old ventilator home in exchange for updates on its progress. She planted it out in the open field of a homestead she couldn’t have afforded if she hadn’t inherited it, where the cupola slowly churned air up from nowhere and out toward the sky, looking like a monolith, looking like a temple. It took a long time, but things that are planted want to grow, and the barn eventually grew up under the antique, slat by slat, the new from the old.
