Informing my superiors about the jury duty situation ended up being a complete non-event. Which isn't actually that surprising. While I'm not necessarily the only person freaking out about a meaningless situation, I'm usually the one freaking out the worst.

My supervisor also acknowledged my planned time off like that was no big deal. That's more surprising, or at least vaguely irritating, because I have no particular evidence to suggest that scheduled time off will be honored, now do I? Not complaining (much). Just noting with interest.

Of course, I have to survive long enough to get to my time off. Since I'm going to be staying late today, possibly more days, and probably coming in on Friday again, that seems...questionable. To say the least.

A couple of positives, so I don't just stew in my own exhausted resentment. My paycheck on Friday should be rather delicious. Considering the costs associated with reassembling my dog into a proper animal over the last few months, this is most welcome. Also, I have the second half of The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet to listen to, which should just about tide me through the rest of this long day. And I'm doing a different job than I have been, which still lets me be alone but is much quieter.

So it's not so bad, really. I can do this at least for today. Tomorrow can fend for itself.

To all those who feel they cannot keep up with the frantic optimism of the new year, remember that we are not all made to grow in the same seasons nor attuned to the same climates. No one can blame the monsoon-adapted moon orchid if it fails to thrive during dry summers; the wind horse cannot run in the doldrums. If the new year is a time when you can do no more than endure, take pride in that endurance and know your season of growth still waits ahead someday.
