They developed a certain affection for some of the species they studied, undeterred even in an awareness of the toxins warned of by bright spots of color or rattling tails. Some of the antivenins required more than chemistry to synthesize, drawing in such diverse fields as protective magic and speculative psychology. Toxicity wasn't limited, after all, to dart frogs or cottonmouths, and the dangerous species they worked with most often and loved most reluctantly was human.
