Ample evidence piled up to support her when she bemoaned how difficult she was to love: the nigh impossibility of finding a time and place where they could see each other, the demands she placed on her living quarters, her dietary restrictions, her apocalyptic temper. Yet every time her lover succeeded in sourcing another patch of consecrated ground, spent the small hours of the night drawing out the summoning circle, recited the spell without so much as a dropped syllable, she answered the call. They insisted she was worth the effort (though they never told the pretty lie of claiming she was easy), even long after the terms of their initial crossroads bargain had run out.
