The two quilters had crossed paths year after year, spotting each other first by their respective styles and then by names on entry slips and award ribbons. A good rival in a small community was hard to come by and worth their weight in inspiration and gossip both, the pettiness being part of the pleasure. Which was why, when one disappeared after accidentally creating a pattern that formed a dimensional portal when stitched together, the other promptly set out to sew a matching quilt and head off on a rescue attempt.
