"I'm getting too old," she said, still brushing away confetti her parents had flung by the handful at the graduation party, a refrain that had been haunting her more openly each year since she had been but ten. Being neither royalty nor the youngest child in a poor family, she had been counting on mere youth to be enticement enough for something fae to whisk her away. Now, she supposed, she would have to do for herself, and she sat down with her books and her imaginary maps to nowhere and tried to work out how she could simply break into fairyland on skill alone.
