scrubjayspeaks: Town sign for (fictional) Lake Lewisia, showing icons of mountains and a lake with the letter L (Lake Lewisia)
Moonlight-responsive runes had been popular for many ages, but after a while, the secrecy of that mechanism wore off. Rising in popularity and in utility was forest writing, which could only be read by the light that filtered through leaves and branches, often locked to certain seasons of light and species of leaves. The makers of such inks found themselves walking the knife edge of climate change and development, which made their methods ever more secure and ever more vulnerable as forests were lost.
