It was difficult, especially in the early years when his spirit and his body were newly acquainted, to make himself remain incarnated. Opportunities presented themselves, accidents and misadventures, to shuck off his skin and all the struggles that came with it, to let his soul go skipping away, down all the rabbit holes and fairy hills and primrose paths that would have been available to a free spirit. Some things could only be learned through blood and bone, though, and he wanted what came at the end of embodiment, even when it meant tying stones to the souls of his feet.
