The boy regarded the animal with interest, clutched carefully in the hands of the girl, and asked, “What does it do?” The girl, who had stumbled upon him at the park with the nerves of someone blundering into an occupied badger set, looked down at the lump of rodent and said, “Guinea pigs don’t really do much, actually.” For the boy, whose first foray into companion animals had involved lectures about caustic breath and spine care, remained fascinated by something so exotically simple.
