When the cell phone had not merely lost signal but given him the error message “now entering forbidden territory…”, he assumed he had been hacked somehow, but he wasn’t going to let it spoil his camping trip. When the fancy GPS started showing him a map that appeared to be hand-drawn and which bled in inky rivulets whenever he touched the screen, fear and anger warred for control of his mind. By the next morning, when even the comparatively rudimentary gas camping stove had picked itself up and wandered off--trundling down a deer path before his disbelieving eyes--a kind of bemused resignation took root as he munched granola and tried to guess how to get back out of whatever he had stumbled into.
