scrubjayspeaks: hand holding pen over notebook (done this week)
Last progress post of 2023! I love this post, which has been circulating for a few years now, about the liminal space between Christmas and New Years. That being said, because I used PTO to turn a couple days off work into a full week and a day, I’ve actually been quite un-couch-like.

Cooked almost everything I could lay my hands on. Sewed everything else. And when I ran out of either of those, I read books and played video games.

I also did some of my usual taking stock and setting goals work for the new year. As stated elsewhere previously, the big goal is to make the arrangements for top surgery*.

I also have goals around baking more, and specifically around planning ahead for ingredients and staking out time in the kitchen. I actually made lists that can be both added to and crossed off as I do the things I want, because I love a list.

And I both made lists and updated my Storygraph reading pile to reflect media I want to get to.

A big theme is being mindful about how I spend my non-work time. Not out of a desire to be more “productive” or to do things that are somehow virtuous. But to actually get to things I want to do, even if they take a little more effort, rather than just doing whatever is most convenient.

Yes, this is partly to cut back on time spent mindlessly scrolling. It’s also to get myself to read and watch new things, instead of just rereading/rewatching. I do love returning to familiar favorites, but sometimes it’s just an avoidance tactic for me.

*That phrasing is very specific, by the way--making the arrangements, not actually having it. I can’t entirely control the timeline for that, on account of doctor wait times and whatnot. It’s important to set goals where you can do your part successfully, even if outside circumstances keep you from achieving the desired result. *stumbles off soapbox*

Lewisia: 3 new pieces, plus another bonus piece written

Day job: none hours, and I didn’t get any emergency calls, so things either went smoothly or burned to the ground entirely

Cooking: scalloped potatoes, brussels sprouts in the Instant Pot, peanut butter styrofoams, cinnamon swirl milk bread, buttermilk Buddha’s hand bread (finally found one at the store, so I didn't miss them this year after all!)

Crafting: sewed more patches on the battle jacket, added this decorative barbed wire stitch to the collar

Listening: It’s Black Friday, Charlie Brown by Louie Zong (a bit late, but there’s never a bad time to listen to this specific flavor of jazz), Let’s Dance by David Bowie (another knew-the-hits album), Days of Thunder by The Midnight (they really are just a consistently safe bet for me)

Aftermarket Parts: follow-up appointment (which I’m now allowed to just do every six months), requested and got approved for a letter of medical necessity to get top surgery (just waiting for the hard copy to arrive in the mail)
