Dressed in a vintage flour sack apron over his waistcoat and trousers, he worked from recipes copied by hand so that there would be no risk of greasy fingerprints on the carefully preserved community cookbooks. He never baked anything developed later than 1979, and anything after 1955 he considered a bit of a tacky novelty. His stand mixer was also vintage, with a power cord and motor that had been repaired and patched and rebuilt enough to function but not so much that it never electrocuted him, but such were the small prices paid for verisimilitude.
