The first challenge, to bake something inspired by a local landmark, felt like it was made just for her, for good or ill, and she briefly considered choosing anyplace other than the Buried Gardens. Ultimately, the desire to share her aspirational, adoptive second home with the wider public won out, and she spent the limited time frantically crafting meringue shelf fungus and isomalt crystals. The resultant cave cake glittered with gemstone growths on a base of bitter black cocoa sponge, though her attempt to make it echo inside resulted in an unfortunate bit of overbaking.
