scrubjayspeaks: hand holding pen over notebook (done this week)
My friend A had a mini stroke on Thursday. She seems to be largely okay at this point. I went to visit her Friday evening in the hospital. Where she was just a couple rooms down from where my dad died.

Which, yes, it’s the nearest hospital to our small town, so it’s understandable. But having to walk down that series of hallways again two weeks later, to once again see how much was left of a person I care about, was arguably more than any one person should have to endure.

Most of my friends are older than I am, some significantly so. And while I’m a huge proponent of intergenerational friendships, they have their downsides. This has been a year of finding out people have cancer, in particular. I don’t want to lose anybody else right now, thank you very fucking much.

My first full week in my new position at work was...baffling. We spend a lot of time just chilling out, to a degree that makes me very antsy. But when we’re working, we’re busting our asses. I spent over an hour on the roof, in the blazing sun, doing maintenance checks on deafening machinery. I also spent our daily team meeting sipping tea and chowing on snacks that I can now store in my desk drawers. I helped repair wiring for a truckbed lift that belongs to my trainer just because, well, it needed to be fixed and we had time. The general manager (who used to supervise this team) rolled by and was like, yo, cool, have fun. Because we can just kind of do whatever. As long as we keep the building from collapsing around everyone, we’re golden.

It is, to say the least, a bizarre change of tone. Apparently, my leaving my former position has brought to the attention of said GM that I was not being well compensated or cared for by the company. (I minced no words in my interview about why I wanted to move to another position/department. I wasn’t getting paid dick for the quantity and difficulty of the work I did.) They are, he promises, working on a pay revision for the position, which will hopefully mean my former partner, now replacement gets a boost. I swore to him I would kick and claw to make that happen, so I’m pleased it seems to be working.
