It’s surprising, the things that are contagious under the right (or wrong) circumstances. Plagues, songs, hiccups--all obvious options--slink alongside hobbies, fashion, and idioms, their transmissible cousins. Personhood, as it turned out, was more often something caught than conferred, as well-loved tchotchkes and loyal appliances and respected rocks acquired a case of individual identity from their nearby humans more often than they were deliberately ensorcelled.
