On Thursday and Friday, I covered for my former partner at work, looking after the machines and his new trainee both. Things were basically fine--there wasn’t a lot that had to get done. Even so, I was sharply reminded that I don’t really miss that routine. I like my new one very much, for all that I’ve barely settled into it.
I continue to get more information about how medical leave works at my job. Short version: I’m not actually going to have to cover my time away with PTO, except for the first week, which temporary disability doesn’t cover. I’m both pleased and annoyed, because I have spent this year torturing myself due to believing that I needed to secure enough PTO to ensure they couldn’t refuse to let me take time off. Their ability to communicate critical information is just pathetic.
We’ve been going through very old photo albums, trying to put together one to have at the memorial for people to look through. It’s still painful to see the old ranch. At least this is it preserved exactly as I remember it; I would sooner die than see whatever it has become since we left. And at some point, I’d like to write about the complicated feelings of seeing my father as a younger man and realizing the degree to which his masculinity has informed mine.
There’s a new cat hanging around our field; not sure yet if it will be willing to make friends with me.
