scrubjayspeaks: Town sign for (fictional) Lake Lewisia, showing icons of mountains and a lake with the letter L (Lake Lewisia)
They held the funerals yearly, when the final counts had come in from the relevant authorities and all hope had been, if not abandoned, at least shifted from rescue and preservation to resurrection. The graves and pyres were always empty; if the last bodies could be found, they were needed for better purposes than mere memorial. Still, they made space for the grief of another name struck from one register and moved to another, from endangered to extinct, lost in one last drooping tail or stilled wing.
