When ey had founded Gender Vegetable out of a garage none of them actually owned or even lived at, playing instruments they had begged, borrowed or invented, Casey had brought only one guiding principle to bear: "yes, more." Up on stage, battering eir voice and body against the invisible walls that had always said, "that's enough, don't go too far, don't take more than your share," ey sang a song of insatiability, adding more harmonies, taking up more space, wearing labels like punk patches on a jacket that never ran out of free space. "Look at this field, empty and full, open and crowded, and know: tonight, every one of us has room to grow as much as we want."
