It felt a bit silly, naming a car that wasn't her first or an antique or anything more than a reliable way to get between here and elsewhere, so she certainly never told anyone about it. It didn't occur to her that she had also never said the name aloud, only held it in her head as the secret name of the car, until the day came when her boyfriend--a bad partner, but the sort of bad that creeps up on a person, inch by petty, controlling inch--left her stranded by the side of the road for yet another imagined slight. And thinking of home and safety and not having to walk miles in heels back to someplace with cell signal, she whispered the name for the first time, then looked to the horizon to see a familiar metal form speeding to her, coming when called like any good beast.
