There's a property on the road I take to get to work which contains at least one, possibly more, emu. I'm not able to spot it every day, but I've seen it often enough that the mere existence of the emu does not surprise me. It's a charming oddity, though.
Today, the emu was not the first thing to catch my attention. I saw some large bird (okay, no, not emu-large, normal-large) flying low over the field. I'm not driving all that fast on this road, mostly because I know I'm approaching the daily traffic jam as we all try to get on the freeway. So I'm paying attention to this bird as it lands in the field. I'm pretty sure it was a hawk, though I considered the possibility of a turkey vulture as well. This is not what I would call interesting, but I like looking at birds, you know?
It is at this point that things rapidly become much more fun. There's a second large bird. There is an emu. There is an emu chasing this second bird. Second bird is sort of gliding out of reach in a way that implies it a) has no intention of actually leaving and b) may have been doing this for a while now. Emu is mad! Bird-on-bird hostility!
This all happened in a few seconds as I drove by, but I was deeply invested. Personally, I'm on Team Emu. That's emu's yard! Get out of here!
Listen, I needed something to be happy about today. Between a microscope-induced eye fatigue headache and the absolutely roaring, totally unexplained pain in my hip, I am hurting way more than I would like to be on this goddamn Monday. Work is a shitshow. My dog is sick. I want to crawl under a rock. But hey, I got to see some big birds being silly, so the day's not a total loss.
