The former mermaid eased herself out of the wheelchair and down onto the frosty planks of the dock until she could dunk her head under the surface of the lake. All at once, the world sounded right again, the high screeches of the land world rounded off and submerged under the long, low hums and gurgles of the water. Far off, she heard the singing of the lake monster, ripples she could feel as much as hear, and she crooned out an answer through the depths.
