Quite without noticing, black and orange had started to crop up in her daily wardrobe, Cheshire stripes and misty crepe suited to a castle keep. The summer spiders, feasting on flies, festooned the corners of the rooms with webs, and all she thought when she saw them was how nice they looked up there, pulling the room together one bridge at a time from molding to lampshade. Though it was still months away, Halloween had snuck into her bloodstream and renewed its spooky influence.
